Green Pool After Vacation: Why It Happens and How It Gets Back to Blue

You come home from a week away, walk out back and the pool looks like a pond. It is a bad moment, and it happens to careful homeowners in Litchfield Park and Surprise every summer. The good news is that a green pool is almost always recoverable. The better news is that once you understand why it happened, you can stop it from happening again.

Why a pool turns green so fast

Green water is algae, and algae is always trying to get into your pool. Spores arrive on wind, dust, leaves and swimsuits. A healthy pool holds them off with a steady level of chlorine and a filter that is moving water. Take away either one and algae takes over.

Arizona heat tilts the odds. Sun and warm water burn through chlorine faster, and warm water is exactly what algae likes. A pool that is fine on day one can have almost no protection by day four, and from there it can bloom in a day or two. Nobody has to do anything wrong. The vacation just lasted a few days longer than the chlorine did.

Equipment adds another cause. If the pump trips a breaker or a timer fails while you are gone, the water sits still and the filter does nothing. A pool that was fine when you left can turn quickly without circulation. Dust storms and monsoon rain bring in debris and throw the chemistry off, which feeds the problem further.

What to do before the technician arrives

  • Keep everyone out of the water until it is clear again.
  • If the pump is running, leave it running. Moving water is better than still water.
  • Scoop out big leaves and debris if you can do it without wading in.
  • Resist the urge to pour in every chemical in the garage. Mixed guesses often make cleanup slower and more expensive.
  • Take a photo and text it to us. It helps us plan before we arrive.

How a green pool cleanup works

Our process is simple to describe. We start with a full assessment: how green the water is, how the walls and floor look, whether the pump and filter are working as they should. The assessment matters because two green pools can need very different work, and a broken pump changes the whole plan.

Next we treat the water. Green pools need more than a routine dose, so this step often involves specialty chemicals beyond what weekly service uses. Then comes the brushing. Algae sticks to walls, steps and corners, and treatment works best when the growth has been broken up so it can be killed and carried to the filter.

The last stage is the one people forget: we monitor the filtration process until the water is clear and properly balanced. A filter has a lot of dead algae to catch, so it loads up quickly and needs attention while the water clears. A filter that clogs halfway through can stall the whole recovery. Sometimes it needs a cleaning before the job is done, and our filter cleaning service at our Filter Cleaning page covers that.

How long it takes

We bring green, neglected pools back to blue, and our timeline is typically within 3 to 5 days. The word that matters there is typically. Most green pools can be restored within a few days, but the exact timeline depends on how severe the algae is, the condition of the water and whether the equipment is working. A pool that has been green for weeks, or one with a failing pump, will take longer.

Cost works the same way. Standard chemicals for routine balancing are included in weekly service, but chemicals required to correct a condition like a green pool may involve an additional charge. We always tell you before adding any extra cost, so you are never surprised by the bill.

Keeping it from happening again

The simplest prevention is weekly service. A technician who tests the water, brushes the pool and checks the equipment every week catches a chlorine drop long before it turns green. If you travel often, weekly service also covers the weeks you are gone, and the photo report lets you see the pool from wherever you are.

If you cannot do weekly service, at least tell someone before a long trip. A quick text to get a visit scheduled while you are away costs far less than a cleanup. And if your pump has been acting up, get it looked at before you leave. Our Pool Repairs page covers pumps, motors, valves and more.
